Trustees’ Week Spotlight: Andrew Milner, Dedicated Service Across Generations
In celebration of Trustees’ Week, the HEY Smile Foundation is delighted to spotlight the remarkable commitment of Andrew Milner, a dedicated trustee whose volunteer leadership has shaped community organisations across East Yorkshire for nearly five decades.
Why Become a Trustee?
Andrew serves as a trustee for the HEY Smile Foundation, Help for Health, and Brantingham Village Hall. His inspiration to become a trustee comes from a sincere desire to give something back: “It’s an opportunity to make a contribution to the local community through charities which serve local people. I wanted to give something back, and being in a position to do so felt right.”
Founding and Building Local Charities
Reflecting on the early days of HEY Smile Foundation, Andrew recalls, “I was a founder trustee of an exciting new charity, determined to make a difference by supporting other local charities as well as serving the community.” His leadership also helped found and guide Help for Health, improving the wellbeing of people across East Yorkshire and Northern Lincolnshire since 2001. He is also Chair at Brantingham Village Hall, working to secure a sustainable and modern resource for future generations.
The Rewards of Trusteeship
When asked about the most rewarding aspect of trusteeship, Andrew says, “It’s being in a position to make a difference for local people and communities, either directly or in partnership with other charities or organisations.”
Personal Growth and Community Impact
His role as a trustee has profoundly influenced both his professional and personal outlook: “I’ve learned a great deal about the vital contribution charities and volunteers make, often without seeking or receiving recognition. Our society and local communities would be hugely worse off – possibly dysfunctional – without volunteers, who are at the heart of a strong society.”
Making a Tangible Difference
With nearly 50 years’ trustee experience, Andrew remains humbled by the commitment of others: “I never stop being amazed at the commitment and sacrifices made by many individual volunteers.”
Andrew has used his wide-ranging experience across the private, public, and voluntary sectors to help transform local charities, develop stronger networks, and secure vital grant funding. He has been involved in modernising organisations, obtaining new premises, and serving as a steady support to colleagues and beneficiaries alike.
Advice for Future Trustees
His advice for new trustees is clear: “Be a loyal supporter. Be available, remember you’re not operational, challenge constructively, and always seek assurance.”
A Grateful Foundation
The HEY Smile Foundation is grateful for Andrew’s tireless dedication, and for all trustees whose leadership and experience continue to strengthen our communities.
