Smile host two Mental Health First Aid courses for Voluntary and Community groups within the East Riding
In February and May of 2024, the HEY Smile Foundation facilitated two Mental Health First Aid courses, supporting staff and volunteers from across 19 different organisations.
Why become an MHFAider?
· A deeper understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect people’s wellbeing
· Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues
· The confidence to step in and support someone to recover their health by guiding them to appropriate support
The impact of mental health first aid training extends beyond the individuals directly supported by volunteers. By equipping volunteers with the tools to address mental health concerns, charities contribute to creating more supportive and empathetic communities. This ripple effect helps break the stigma surrounding mental health and encourages open discussions about mental well-being.
Community Development Manager Sophie Bartup says:
“It is incredibly important that staff and volunteers that work within voluntary and community groups are empowered to access and attend training that will enable them to create more inclusive environments, to support the health and wellbeing of their beneficiaries.
I would like to say thank you to Debbie Britton from DB Counselling Services for leading each of the courses and to the participants, who dedicated their time to their learning and development, with the aim of supporting people in their own communities.”
