“A Dream Come True”: Interview with new Humber NHS Nurse

The Dost project has been supporting our latest cohort of international nurses recruited by Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust (check out newsletter issue 7 for our ‘welcome’ post!). One such recruit is Christabel Rapando from Kenya. The Dost project caught up with her as she carried out her day-to-day duties with the Trust at her base in Malton.

What is your role within the Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust?

I am a nurse by profession and currently a fully registered nurse here in the UK (waiting for my pin). My role within Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust is to provide total nursing care which involves assessing, planning, implementing and doing intervention as per patients and to always maintain patients’ dignity.

What does a typical day at work look like for yourself?

I am passionate about my work thus makes it easy for me to perform the required tasks.  Being new international nurses, for me I am so grateful to Malton community hospital staff for being there and ensuring we are comfortable. I have adjusted to the duties, and I understand the type of care I provide to the patients.

As an international recruit, how would you describe your experience of life in the UK so far?

So far, my stay in UK has been fabulous. Everyone I have met is so kind-hearted and ready to help thus making it faster for me to settle. Thanks also to the recruitment team.  Being a flexible person who easily fits in new environment has been to my advantage.

What was the most challenging part about moving to the UK?

The most challenging part was to move without my family. But hoping I will be able to bring them over next year. Sometimes it feels lonely! Relocating to UK has been one of my dreams and YES, it’s a dream come true. Now hoping to advance my career and give my kids a better future.

What has been the best part about life within the NHS?

Working in the NHS and to be more precise Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust has been exciting. The working environment, staffs are just marvellous. They are loving and so supportive.

If you could offer one piece of advice for those considering a career in the NHS, what would that be?

I will highly recommend NHS to anyone seeking employment. Just ensure you have the required qualifications and be objective of what you want. NHS provides the best working environment and the time allocated for work is convenient.
