GOLF COMPETITION RAISES £11,000 FOR THE SMILE FOUNDATION

The annual Swing When You’re Winning golf competition has raised £11,000 for the Smile Foundation.

The event saw a record 60 teams compete in two qualifier rounds at Burstwick Golf Club in Burstwick and Elsham Golf Club in North Lincolnshire, before the top nine teams from each went head-to-head in the final at Hessle Golf Club in Cottingham on May 20.

Now in its fifth year, Swing When You’re Winning is jointly organised by us and Santander, and supported by Dalby Offshore and the Lewis Ashley Group.

Taking the top spot in the competition was the Save On Used Cars team from Scunthorpe, who returned for a second year to claim the title.

Captain Chris Gibbons said: “The event was great and very well organised.

“We played and qualified last year but lost by half a shot. The day of the qualifier round was freezing, so it was really nice to see some sun on the day of the final and we thought the course was superb.

“We were also really pleased to support the charity and we really enjoyed the day. It’s always great to win.”

Money raised on the day will help us continue to support the dozens of causes and groups we work with throughout the year.

Paul Atkinson, Relationship Manager at Santander, said: “We are so pleased to work with the Smile Foundation again and to attract 60 teams to the event is amazing.

“Swing When You’re Winning is fast becoming one of the biggest golf events in the local area and we hope it continues to go from strength-to-strength for years to come.

“We’re delighted the competition raised £11,000. It will make a fantastic difference.”

Nippon Gohsei finished first in the Burstwick heat, with Santander in second, while Display Pak finished first in the Elsham heat followed by Miller Estates in second.

Prizes were awarded to the first four teams in the final, with Power People taking second place, Airkool in third and Simon Engineering in fourth.

Ten new teams reached this year’s final, with eight competing for a second time.

Smile’s Organiser Sarah Shepherdson said: “We had an absolutely fantastic competition this year, with everyone involved giving it their all as usual.

“We’d like to thank everyone for their time, effort and input, the sponsors for their backing, and FG Sports for additional prizes donated for the winning teams.

“Smile receives great support from the business community and to attract 60 teams was a record for this event, which is an amazing achievement.

“After wind, rain, hail and snow in the qualifier heats, it was brilliant to have better weather on the day of the final.

“With some new teams entering this year, it’s been great to spread the word about Smile and raise awareness, as well as money, throughout the competition.

“We’re already looking forward to next year and hope to see everyone again.”
