Spectators from around East Yorkshire flocked to watch last Saturday’s Humber Bridge Soapbox Derby, which raised over £9,000 for charity.

29 teams took part in this year’s event, battling it out in the sunshine to win a range of prizes. The teams were a mixture of corporate entries and individuals:

Local families enjoyed not only the thrills and spills of the racing, many enjoyed pop-up basketball and tennis provided by local charity Child Dynamix, a bite to eat from food vendors and even a wizz around the skateboard park.

The popular local Soapbox Derby is run by Smile and Hessle Town Council in association with the Humber Bridge Board. The event would not be possible without the support of sponsors Sargent Electrical, P&O Ferries, Specsavers Hessle and Tesco Extra Hull, who enable an event of this size to be staged in Hessle.

Competition on the day was fierce with some fantastic entries and an incredible effort from all teams, but last year’s overall winners, Tad 1, successfully held onto their crown, also winning Fastest Senior and Fastest Run of the Day. The full breakdown of prize winners was as follows:

Sponsors Choice Award: SHTC Racers (Team from South Holderness Tech College)

Fastest Corporate: Specsavers Hessle

Fastest Senior: Tad 1 (team from Lambert Engineering)

Overall Winner: Tad 1

Best Novelty/Themed: Slimer’s Scream Machine

Best Turned Out: Everquip

Fastest Junior: 1st Hibaldstow & Scawby Explorer Scouts

Fastest Run of the Day: Tad 1
